In a symbolic gesture that resonated across families in the UAE, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has directed authorities to replace the term “housewife” with a more meaningful title: “Generations Shaper.” The announcement on Saturday (March 21), made in celebration of Mother’s Day, reflects a broader recognition of the vital role mothers play, not just at home, but in shaping the future of society. According to Dubai authorities, the Dubai Crown Prince instructed the Community Development Authority to adopt the new term in official use, marking a shift in how caregiving roles are acknowledged. In his message, Sheikh Hamdan described mothers as the first teachers in a child’s life. He said they are “the place where children learn belonging, responsibility and the values that shape strong nations.” He added a heartfelt tribute: "To all our mothers… Thank you. You are the foundation of everything good. Happy Mother’s Day.” The move struck a chord with many residents, especially in a multicultural society like the UAE, where millions of mothers juggle family, work and community roles. By reframing “housewife” into “Generations Shaper,” the initiative highlights how mothers contribute far beyond the household; raising future leaders, nurturing values and building stronger communities.

Uplifting through language

This is not the first time Dubai’s leadership has introduced terms aimed at promoting dignity and inclusion. In 2017, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, officially introduced the term “People of Determination.” The directive replaced the phrase “people with special needs,” shifting the focus toward strength, achievements and active participation in society.
