Dubai residents will see an increase in their Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) sewerage fees starting this January, marking the first adjustment in nearly a decade. The incremental hike will begin at 1.5 fils per gallon in 2025, rising to 2 fils in 2026 and peaking at 2.8 fils per gallon by 2027. The revised fees are part of a long-term strategy to support critical infrastructure developments and promote sustainable urban growth. Dubai Municipality noted that the adjustment aligns with the emirate’s rapid population growth and increasing demands on infrastructure. A spokesperson for the Dubai Government Media Office highlighted the need for this change: “Dubai’s robust economic growth, coupled with a significant population increase, has driven the need for continuous infrastructure development across all service sectors.” The municipality also emphasized the importance of water conservation. The new fee structure aims to encourage residents and businesses to adopt sustainable water usage practices, ensuring Dubai remains resilient to future challenges. Despite the fee hike, Dubai Municipality assured residents that tariffs remain below the global average, maintaining affordability compared to cities with similar economic profiles. The last sewerage fee adjustment in Dubai was introduced in 2015 at 1 fil per gallon. This fee applied to properties connected to both public and private networks. Projected to reach a population of 7.8 million by 2040, Dubai is investing heavily in urban planning, water treatment, and waste management systems. These efforts are key to sustaining the city’s rapid expansion while meeting environmental benchmarks.
