A 3-year-old boy's breathing restored at Dubai Hospital

Doctors at Dubai Hospital were able to help a 3-year-old boy from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) who had been suffering from acute shortness of breath due to obstruction of the larynx since birth. In his home country, the child was operated on shortly after birth to create an emergency opening in the neck, and a tube was put to assist in the creation of a breathing pathway. The parents traveled to Dubai and sought treatment at Dubai Hospital, which specializes in difficult ENT surgery. The medical staff performed a thorough analysis of the tests. They chose laryngotracheoplasty surgery to provide a permanent, stable airway for the boy to breathe through without the aid of a breathing tube. Surgery would also help with difficulties like voice and swallowing. Initially, surgeons used cartilage grafts from the child's thoracic cage to repair the larynx and trachea. "The two-hour laryngotracheoplasty surgery was performed four months ago under general anesthesia after diagnosis using the endoscope and CT scan of the trachea. Cartilage graft was taken from the thoracic cage of the patient to reconstruct the stenotic area, which is the lower part of the larynx and the upper part of the trachea to widen the lumen of the airway. We placed a stent in the trachea to hold it in position for a few months. The stent was removed a few days back and the child managed to breathe and speak normally," said Dr Jamal Kassouma, Consultant ENT Surgeon at Dubai Hospital who performed the surgery. According to Dr. Kassouma, the child was released from the hospital last week and is in good health. After surgery, he will require medical follow-up for a month as well as endoscopic procedures to confirm that the airway has healed and that no constrictions or fibrosis have developed. Dr. Kassouma stated that in this type of operation, which necessitates a great deal of experience and knowledge, a high level of precision and accuracy is required, citing other comparable instances treated at Dubai Hospital. He said that 11 similar cases sent from other hospitals in the region were performed in Dubai hospital. He went on to say that the team at Dubai Hospital was the first in the UAE to do an operation like this nearly nine years ago.
