A Dubai court has fined a motorist and ordered him to pay blood money after an accident that killed an electric scooter rider on Al Wasl Road. The Dubai Misdemeanor Court ruled that the Gulf national must pay a Dh10,000 fine and Dh50,000 in blood money to the heirs of the victim, an Asian man who died after being struck while crossing the road. The incident took place last March. A police officer from Bur Dubai Police Station said the victim was riding an electric scooter when he was hit by the driver’s car and later succumbed to his injuries. During interrogation, the driver claimed the victim had suddenly crossed from a non-designated pedestrian area, leaving him unable to avoid the collision. However, investigators found that the driver had committed several traffic violations, including running a red light, failing to pay attention, and not slowing down at a pedestrian crossing. The court held both the driver and victim partially responsible. The victim was faulted for attempting to cross while riding a scooter instead of dismounting and ensuring the road was clear. “The defendant and the victim both failed to fulfill the legally required duties of caution and care. This negligence constituted criminal liability,” the ruling stated. The driver was ordered to pay both the fine and blood money as part of the judgment. ICA/Expat Media
