Dubai is set to begin trials for autonomous taxis later this year, marking a significant milestone in the city's ambition to lead in transport innovation. The announcement was made by Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), who confirmed that trials will be conducted with leading technology partners, including Uber and Baidu’s Apollo Go. As part of the Dubai Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to transition 25 percent of all journeys to autonomous vehicles by 2030, the trials will feature safety drivers behind the wheel as a precautionary measure. These trials are seen as a key step towards the full-scale launch of commercial autonomous taxis by 2026. “Uber, with WeRide, and Baidu’s Apollo Go will begin autonomous taxi trials this year,” Al Tayer said. “The deployment of autonomous vehicles will help improve road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance mobility, particularly for senior citizens and people of determination.” Al Tayer expressed his satisfaction that both companies had chosen Dubai as a hub for the global expansion of their autonomous operations, noting that these driverless vehicles would improve first and last-mile connectivity for public transport users.
