Dubai: Drunk driver jailed for 3 months after running over, killing another driver
A drunk driver who ran over another motorist on the roadside was sentenced to three months in prison. Prosecutors told Dubai Traffic Court that the Tunisian man, 37, consumed a substantial amount of alcohol before getting behind the wheel on September 11, 2022. He was driving along Hessa Street toward Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road when he swerved and collided with the victim, standing on the side of the road. Just minutes before the deadly collision, the man was cleaning up pieces of his car that had fallen off after it was hit by another vehicle. He died at the scene, and a female passenger in his car was injured. Police officers who arrived at the scene ordered the driver to take a breathalyzer test after they suspected he was drunk. He was arrested after the equipment detected "very high" levels of alcohol in his blood. The Dubai Traffic Court issued the ruling, stating that it was a wrongful death rather than intentional murder. The judges suspended the man's license for a year, fined him Dh10,000, and ordered him to pay Dh200,000 in blood money to the deceased's relatives. The man admitted to drunk driving, causing wrongful death, inflicting injuries, and destroying both vehicles in court, but he blamed the victim for standing on the side of the road. His defense was rejected, and he was convicted guilty on all charges. The UAE has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to drinking and driving. This means that there is no legal limit for drinking while driving.
