A 28-year-old Egyptian man has been fined Dh2,000 by the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours for stealing two electric scooters while under the influence of alcohol. According to court records, the incident occurred on April 20, 2024, in the Warsan 4 area. The defendant had consumed alcohol at his residence around 1am. An hour later, he stepped outside and noticed two electric scooters parked behind a bakery. The scooters, valued at Dh1,500, belonged to an employee of the establishment and had their keys left in them. Taking advantage of the situation, the defendant took the scooters and rode off. The next morning, the bakery’s owner was informed of the theft by an employee. “Around 11:30am, I received a call from one of the bakery workers informing me that the e-scooters had been stolen,” the owner testified in court. For two days, the defendant kept the scooters until their batteries drained. He then attempted to charge them at a nearby grocery store, where the original owner spotted them and immediately alerted the police. Officers arrived at the scene and arrested the man. During police interrogation, the suspect admitted to both the theft and illegal alcohol consumption. However, when he appeared in court, he denied the charges. The judges found him guilty of both offenses and initially sentenced him to one month in prison. Upon appeal, the court reconsidered the penalty and imposed a Dh2,000 fine instead of imprisonment.
