Dubai has expanded its single-use plastic ban to include more products as part of its commitment to sustainability and reducing environmental waste. The expanded ban, which took effect on January 1, covers items such as plastic straws, cups, stirrers, and Styrofoam food containers. This initiative builds on the emirate’s earlier ban on single-use plastic bags, implemented in 2023. Under that phase, plastic bags under 57 micrometres in thickness were prohibited. The new rules are a significant step in Dubai’s long-term plan to phase out environmentally harmful materials by 2026. A Dubai Municipality spokesperson explained the rationale for the ban: “The phased rollout ensures businesses have ample time to adapt while reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.” Businesses are now required to transition to biodegradable or reusable alternatives. This includes restaurants, cafes, and takeaways, which must adopt eco-friendly packaging solutions to comply with the new regulations. Non-compliance may result in penalties, including fines or, in severe cases, business closures. The authorities hope these measures will encourage widespread adoption of sustainable practices across industries. By 2026, the second phase of the ban will extend restrictions to include additional single-use products like Styrofoam tableware. Dubai aims to serve as a regional leader in sustainable development by setting an example for other cities. Environmental groups have praised the move, emphasizing its importance in addressing global plastic pollution. According to studies, the UAE generates a significant amount of plastic waste annually, much of which ends up in landfills or oceans. The municipality is working closely with businesses to ensure a smooth transition. Several companies have already begun using alternatives like paper straws, reusable cups, and compostable packaging.
