Dubai expat dies in Sri Lanka blasts

DUBAI – A Dubai resident on vacation in Sri Lanka was killed in one of the bomb blasts that rocked the country on Sunday, sources close to the victim said. Razeena Kukkady, 58, was staying in the Shangri-La Hotel when suicide bombers attacked. Earlier that day, she had dropped her husband at the airport before going back to the hotel, said Abdulla Madumoole, her relative. Her husband only learned of the attacks upon landing in Dubai and immediately caught the next flight back to Sri Lanka. “He is totally devastated,” Madumoole said. Kukkady was born in Sri Lanka but grew up in India. She later moved to Dubai with her husband. Their two children are living in the US. At least 290 people were killed and nearly 500 others injured in a series of explosions at four hotels and three churches in Sri Lanka on Sunday. Police on Monday said they have arrested 24 suspects. Sources close to the family said they are hoping to bring Kukkady’s remains to Kerala for burial.
