Jaywalkers are caught in the act in Dubai. DUBAI POLICE

A total of 28,027 people have been fined for jaywalking in Dubai in the past five months, according to Dubai Police. The crackdown comes amid new, tougher traffic laws aimed at improving pedestrian safety. Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Acting Assistant Commandant for Operations at Dubai Police, said jaywalking remains a serious issue, particularly in congested areas. Nine deaths have been linked to unsafe road crossings during the same period. “These figures reflect the continued presence of dangerous practices that jeopardize lives, whether by ignoring designated pedestrian crossings or by unsafe behaviour,” Al Mazrouei said. The Dubai Police also reported confiscating 15,029 scooters within the same time frame due to misuse, with four deaths linked to e-scooter accidents. The intensified campaign follows the UAE’s updated federal traffic law, which took effect on March 29. Under the new rules, jaywalkers who cause an accident may face fines of up to Dh10,000 and potential jail time. For violations in areas where the speed limit is 80 km/h or more, the minimum penalty includes three months in prison and/or a Dh10,000 fine. Al Mazrouei highlighted the importance of pedestrian bridges and crossings and encouraged residents to cooperate with authorities to protect themselves and others. Public reporting of traffic violations is encouraged through the “Police Eye” service in the Dubai Police app or the “We Are All Police” hotline at 901. ICA/Expat Media
