The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced three Asians in their presence and two others in absentia to six months in jail, followed by deportation, and fined them Dh455,000 for stealing the same amount as the fine, including special documents from a furniture store owner where three of the defendants worked. The case began in May of last year when the owner of a furniture store in the Dragon Mart filed a complaint alleging that his briefcase containing Dh455,000 and documents had been stolen from his vehicle. According to the reports, while the storeowner was about to get into his vehicle, an Asian took him by surprise, stole his briefcase, and fled. A team of detectives gathered evidence and discovered that three salesmen employed by the store owner were involved in the theft. They were apprehended, and some of the stolen money was found in their possession. One of the defendants admitted to conspiring with two coworkers to steal the storeowner's money. The defendant said he agreed with his two workmates to persuade the storeowner to install surveillance cameras inside the store, adding that the storeowner assigned him to communicate with a specialist to install the cameras. Another defendant stated that he communicated with two other defendants, both of whom are still at large, to install cameras inside the store and direct one of them to the safe. He also requested that they provide him with the surveillance cameras' secret code once installed. The third defendant admitted that he was looking through the surveillance cameras when he noticed the storeowner putting money in his briefcase and walking to his vehicle in the Dragon Mart parking lot. He contacted the other two defendants, and one of them took the storeowner by surprise, snatched his briefcase, and fled. The three salesmen admitted to dividing the stolen money and received Dh65,000 each. Dh65,000 was discovered with one of the defendants, Dh50,000 with the second, and Dh37,000 with the third.
