Bid to dupe Dubai expat in Dh245,000 car deal foiled, 3 arrested

DUBAI - Police have arrested a three-member gang who tried to dupe a British woman into selling her Aston Martin worth Dh245,000 in exchange for a forged manager's cheque. The woman had advertised her car for sale on a website and was contacted by a Gulf national who offered her a manager's cheque worth Dh245,000, said Major-General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in Chief of Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation Affairs. Al Mansouri said that the police contacted the woman before she was able to sell her car to the man and asked her to cooperate in a sting operation to arrest the suspect. “We explained that the man is part of a gang specialised in buying cars for forged manager cheque. We set a trap and arrested the suspect,” Al Mansouri said. The police have been investigating the case after receiving eight complaints from the gang's victims. “The gang were targeting online advertise about luxury cars. They managed to get cars like Maserati, Jaguar and Audi worth Dh3 million but we arrested them and prevent the sell of the Austin Martin,” Al Mansouri said. Police were able to arrest the Arab suspect at a petrol station on Sheikh Zayed Road. Police also arrested his companions, an Arab man who issued the forged cheques, and another Arab national who aided the pair. Police seized many forged manager's cheques in the second suspect's possession. The trio has been referred to the public prosecution. They have been charged with attempted fraud and forgery.
