Dubai freak accident victim wakes up from coma

  DUBAI – An Indian woman who fell into a coma after a freak accident in Dubai has woken up months after the incident. Suchitra Pratap, 61, was visiting her son in Dubai when she fell and hit her head after a child playing football ran into her on February 6 in Discovery Gardens. Witnesses said she was bleeding profusely and was led by passers-by to a nearby bench where she lost consciousness. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors performed surgery on her to ease swelling in her brain. Community residents had helped raise Dh50,000 for her treatment, with the hospital bill mounting to Dh300,000. She was later flown in an air ambulance to KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad, India for further treatment, said her son, Navdeep Pratap, a business development manager in Dubai. Pratap said his mother started to show signs of improvement within two weeks and was transferred to Suvitas Rehabilitation Centre for physical therapy. Suchitra is now able to recognize people as well as respond to her visitors with a smile or a hug, her son said. The family is hoping to get Suchitra back in Dubai. The retired English professor arrived in the UAE on December 21 on a three-month visa. She had planned to live in Dubai with her family.
