Dubai: Gang jailed, fined Dh1.9m after kidnapping, robbery

The Dubai Court of Appeal upheld the three-year prison sentence and the Dh1.9 million fine handed to eight suspects, including one who remains at large, who posed as policemen and then kidnapped a businessman and an employee. The court also ordered the convicts to be deported once their sentences were completed. In the meantime, the Dubai Civil Court ordered the gang members to pay the company Dh1.9 million with legal interest at the rate of 5 percent from the date of the claim until full payment, in addition to the fees and expenses. The case dates back to September 2020, when the businessman reported that he and an employee were kidnapped from their office by a group who posed as police officers and then stole Dh1.9 million from them. The group used three cars to drive to International City, where they abandoned the victims in one of the vehicles before fleeing. The businessman said that three gang members introduced themselves as policemen and then asked him for his business license. When he tried to contact his business partner, one of the men snatched his mobile phone and took the keys to the company's safe. They then forced he businessman and an employee to get inside one of the vehicles outside the company's headquarters were five other gang members were waiting. "When I asked them about the reason for our arrest, one of the five defendants said that they are heading to the police station for interrogation," the victim said. In International City, the businessman asked them for water, so they stopped in front of a grocery store and allowed the other person to go and buy water. The men handed over the businessman's mobile phone and instructed him to buy them an energy drink. When they returned from the grocery store, they found that the men had left. The businessman then called his partner, and then reported the incident to the police. According to a police official, the second and third suspects were apprehended after a thorough investigation. The two arrested suspects then led the police to the rest of the suspects, who were arrested. Police were able to seize part of the stolen money in their possession. During the interrogation, the suspects admitted that they had planned to rob the company and that one of them previously worked there. BKM/ Expat Media
