Global Village denies ‘fingerprint hack’ of 15k customers

DUBAI – Popular Dubai entertainment venue Global Village has debunked claims that as many as 15,000 fingerprint data of its customers have been hacked. Global Village, in a statement, said it “is currently not facing any security vulnerability”. “We do not collect any biometric data from our guests and visitors as only entry ticket barcodes are scanned once they enter Global Village,” the Global Village said, adding that they are, nonetheless, conducting an internal investigation. The venue is closed for the summer season but will reopen in October. The entertainment venue made the statement after it was named as one of several companies allegedly affected by a leak of data handled by a security company. Researchers of cyber security firm, vpnMentor, said they were able to access more than a million data, including fingerprints, account passwords and photographs from large databases used by Biostar 2 security systems. vpnMentor said the “huge leak” that affected businesses and organisations presents “potential for criminal activity” and massive fraud. Biostar 2 maker, Suprema, said in a statement to BBC news that it was taking reports of the breach “very seriously” ‘and is “investigating the allegations”.
