Dubai hackers impersonate lawyer, steal Dh232,340

  DUBAI – Three hackers have been arrested in Dubai after impersonating a lawyer and duping his client into paying them Dh232,340 in legal fees. According to police records, the fraudsters hacked the lawyer’s email account and stole his client’s contact details. They then contacted the lawyer’s client through Skype and emails and sent him letters claiming that his civil lawsuits have been resolved and that his financial claims have been deposited in his bank account. The fraudsters asked him to pay them for various fees, including court fees, accountancy fees and other charges. The crime was discovered after the victim, a businessman based in Turkey, visited Dubai and found out that bank letters sent to him were fake. He also visited his lawyer’s office where he found out that it was fraudsters who contacted him. "In their correspondence with my client, they made him believe that they work for me and that the amounts they charged him were court, legal expertise and accountancy fees," the lawyer told investigators. The fraudsters defrauded the businessman of Dh232,340 in total, the lawyer said. After lodging a police case against the suspects, they were arrested near a shopping centre in Al Rigga in Dubai. The three defendants are now on trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance. Their next hearing is scheduled on August 4. ICA/Expat Media
