Dubai Police has cracked a high-profile burglary case, leading to the conviction of three individuals who stole luxury jewellery worth over half a million dirhams from a villa in Dubai’s Al Barari area. The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced two men and a woman to six months in prison and imposed a joint fine of Dh528,000 for their involvement in the crime. The defendants, all Chinese, will be deported after serving their sentences. According to police records, the theft occurred on April 19, 2024, when the primary suspect broke into a private villa at night. Equipped with two screwdrivers and a crowbar, he forced his way into the home, targeting a metal safe that contained an array of expensive jewellery. Among the stolen items were a Bulgari gold necklace worth Dh285,000; two Van Cleef necklaces, valued at Dh80,000 and Dh70,000; three Cartier gold rings, priced at Dh8,000, Dh4,000, and Dh5,000, a Tiffany gold necklace worth Dh55,000, a Jennifer Meyer gold necklace valued at Dh8,000; a Dior gold-plated necklace and a Hermes gold-plated bracelet, both worth Dh8,000 and Dh5,000 respectively. The homeowner only discovered the burglary the next morning and immediately alerted authorities.

Getaway plan gone wrong

After the heist, the first defendant contacted the second, boasting about his successful theft and offering to sell the jewellery. The second defendant agreed and enlisted his wife—the third accused—to help smuggle the stolen items out of the UAE. Their plan involved concealing jewellery in luggage and wearing some of the pieces to avoid suspicion. However, their scheme unraveled at Abu Dhabi International Airport, where airport authorities intercepted the couple before they could board an international flight. A thorough search of their belongings revealed the stolen valuables, prompting immediate arrests. Meanwhile, Dubai Police’s investigation led them to the first suspect’s residence, where they uncovered the break-in tools used in the crime. During initial questioning, the first defendant confessed to the burglary, detailing how he broke into the villa, stole the safe, and later forced it open to retrieve the jewellery. The second defendant admitted to purchasing the stolen goods and attempting to smuggle them abroad, while the third accused acknowledged her role in transporting the jewellery. However, in court, the trio pleaded not guilty, changing their original statements. Despite this, the Dubai Criminal Court found them guilty and ordered that if they fail to pay the Dh528,000 fine, they will serve one extra day in prison for every Dh100 unpaid. ICA/Expat Media
