Traffic congestion along Hessa Street will now be a thing of the past after the Roads and Transport Authority fully opened the upgraded corridor on Sunday (April 19). The improved stretch between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road now reduces travel time from 15 minutes to just four, while improving traffic flow in both directions, according to the RTA. The 4.5km corridor, long known as a congestion hotspot, has been widened to four lanes in each direction, with upgraded intersections and new bridges. The project benefits residents in key areas such as Al Barsha, Al Sufouh 2, and Jumeirah Village Circle, where heavy traffic has been a daily concern. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said the development is part of a broader strategy to support Dubai’s growth. “Hessa Street is one of Dubai’s most important strategic road corridors,” Al Tayer said. “The project increases Hessa Street’s capacity from 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, representing a 100 per cent increase,” he added. The project included upgrades to four major intersections along Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road, featuring new ramps, expanded bridges, and improved junctions. Work has also begun on Phase 2, which will extend the corridor to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. The next phase will include new bridges and a tunnel, aiming to reduce travel time from 24 minutes to five minutes while doubling capacity for surrounding communities.
