A cleaner at a hotel in Bur Dubai has been sentenced to three months in jail followed by deportation after being found guilty of stealing Dh11,000 from a tourist’s suitcase. The incident took place in October last year when a Gulf visitor and his wife, who were staying at the hotel, discovered that money was missing from their belongings. The visitor reported the theft to hotel management, prompting an internal investigation. Surveillance footage revealed that the cleaner had accessed the guest’s room under the guise of performing his duties and stole the cash from a suitcase. Upon being interrogated by Dubai Police, the cleaner confessed to the crime. The court handed down the jail sentence, followed by deportation, in accordance with UAE law on theft and breach of trust. The Dubai Criminal Court ruled that the cleaner’s actions violated the trust placed in him by the hotel and its guests, with the case serving as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in safeguarding personal belongings.
