Dubai housemaid throws her newborn in garbage bin and gets life in prison for crime

DUBAI – A housemaid will spend life in prison for killing her newborn and throwing him in a garbage bin. The 32-year-old Indonesian woman appealed for a reduced punishment following February’s court ruling, but presiding judge Eisa Al Sharif on Sunday upheld her life sentence. At the Dubai Appeals Court, the Indonesian mother admitted that she threw her baby boy in the garbage bin shortly after she gave birth to him at her employer’s bathroom. She told the court that she did not intend to kill the baby. Two cleaners discovered the baby in an Al Barsha garbage bin, telling police they initially thought it was an injured animal. When they found that the baby was still breathing, they called the police. The baby died shortly after being rushed to the hospital. Court records showed that the mother had initially attempted to abort the baby, whose father is an Asian man living in Satwa. When the baby was born, she wrapped him in cloth, beat him up and then threw him in the garbage bin, police said. In Sunday’s ruling, the woman has also been sentenced to spend an extra year in jail for having sex out of wedlock and will be deported after serving her time in jail. She has 30 days to make an appeal before the Cassation Court.
