Dubai: Housemaid jailed for stealing nearly Dh5,000 from sponsor

An African housemaid is now in jail for stealing nearly Dh5,000 in cash of multiple currencies from her sponsor. The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced the housemaid to three months in jail and gave her a fine equivalent to the cash that she stole. She will be deported after serving her jail term. The court did not give further details about her identity or nationality. According to records, the housemaid stole Dh2,000 and 3,000 (Dh2,938) Saudi riyals from her Arab sponsor’s home in Sheikh Zayed Road. The Arab victim said that the housemaid worked for her for four months, and that on the day of the incident, the latter went to throw out the garbage but did not return home. She tried to call the housemaid on her mobile phone but did not get a reply. When she checked the housemaid’s room, she found out that she fled with her clothes and personal belongings. The woman also discovered that cash totaling Dh2,000 and 3,000 Saudi riyals that she kept in her bedroom dresser was missing, prompting her to alert the police. The housemaid was subsequently tracked down and arrested. During interrogation, she said that she fled from her sponsor’s home due to maltreatment and delay in the payment of her salary.
