A 23-year-old Indian expat has been sentenced to three years in prison and fined Dh150,000 in Dubai after being convicted of attempted murder for stabbing a compatriot multiple times during a violent altercation at a workers' accommodation in Al Quoz. The Dubai Criminal Court found the man guilty of attempting to kill his roommate in December 2023 following a heated argument. According to court records, both men were consuming alcohol when the victim allegedly insulted the accused, triggering a physical altercation. Witnesses reported that the defendant, in an intoxicated state, grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest, face, and abdomen, causing severe injuries. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found the victim bleeding profusely on the floor. He was immediately rushed to Rashid Hospital, where medical reports confirmed he had suffered deep stab wounds and required urgent surgical intervention. Following an investigation, Dubai Police arrested the accused and recovered the weapon used in the attack. During interrogation, he initially denied attempting to kill his roommate, stating that he had been drunk and could not recall the full details of the incident. “He (the accused) was drunk and acting strange, laughing for no reason at times,” said a co-worker who witnessed the altercation. “Both the victim and the accused were seated next to each other in the smoking area. Just seconds after I turned my attention to my mobile phone, they began screaming at each other, which ultimately led to the stabbing.” Following the attack, court records show that the defendant barged into their accommodation, causing further disturbance. As a result, he faced additional charges for consuming alcohol and creating a public disturbance. The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced him to three years in prison for attempted murder, in addition to six more months for alcohol consumption and causing a public disturbance. He was also fined an additional Dh100,000, bringing the total penalty to Dh150,000. Upon completing his prison term, the court has ordered his deportation.

Authorities also reiterated that alcohol consumption is regulated under strict laws in Dubai, with individuals prohibited from drinking in public places, labor accommodations, and workplaces without proper permits.
