After years of waiting and viral complaints about standing under the scorching Dubai sun, International City residents finally have their first covered bus stop. The newly installed bus shelter, spotted by Expat Media on Saturday (October 11), is located in the same area where commuters were once seen waiting under date trees — an image that sparked widespread discussion earlier this year after Expat Media first reported the issue. The modern shelter marks a welcome change for residents of one of Dubai’s busiest and most diverse communities. However, it currently appears to be the only covered bus stop in the entire International City area. “I’ve lived here since 2018 and have to commute every day. It’s really difficult during summer,” Siraj P., a long-time resident, told Expat Media. “International City is one of the earliest communities built in Dubai, but I don’t understand why progress on shaded bus stops is slow.” In May, Expat Media reported that residents complained anew about being forced to seek refuge under trees or carry umbrellas while waiting for buses, as none of the bus stops had shelters. The lack of shaded structures drew renewed calls from the community for more comfortable and safer public transport amenities. While the new covered bus stop is a positive development, residents say they hope this is just the beginning of a broader rollout across the area. Many rely on public buses for their daily commutes, especially during the peak summer months when temperatures can soar above 45°C. In 2022, an informal community effort saw volunteers leaving free umbrellas for commuters in the France Cluster — a temporary fix that highlighted the community’s resilience but also its urgent need for proper infrastructure.
