Dubai jails Asian scammer who stole Dh4,700 from customer who ordered Dh45 meal
An Asian man has been jailed in Dubai for stealing Dh4,700 from a customer who ordered a fast food meal worth Dh45 from a fake website set up by the scammer. The Dubai Misdemeanor Court sentenced the man to two months in jail. He was also fined Dh4,700. He will be deported after serving his sentence. The court heard that the Asian worked with other suspects to create a fake website of a popular fast food chain that was used to lure unsuspecting victims. The case unfolded after an Asian customer filed a police report complaining that he had been defrauded by a popular fast food chain in January 2022. The man said he ordered a meal worth Dh45 on the restaurant’s website and used his credit card. He would soon receive messages stating that several purchases totaling Dh4,700 were deducted from his bank account. A team of investigators tracked the transactions to an Asian scammer, who was arrested at his residence. During interrogation, the Asian admitted that he belonged to an international gang specialized in creating fake pages of various shops and restaurants to steal bank data from victims. He said that the used the Dh4,700 to buy energy drinks from a shopping app that did not require an Emirates ID to receive the items. He claimed that he then sold the drinks to a store to get their value in cash.
