Dubai jails housemaid for stealing employer’s valuables to send in care boxes

An Asian housemaid has been jailed in Dubai for stealing from her employer and trying to send the stolen items in care boxes to be shipped to her home country. The Dubai Court of Appeal upheld an earlier judgement sentencing the woman to six months in jail and a fine of Dh2,000. She will be deported after serving her jail term. The case dates back to last July when the housemaid stole valuable items from her employer, including luxury watches, jewellery, a laptop and tablet, as well as kitchenware and clothes. She reportedly hid the stolen items in boxes in her room before traveling to her homeland for her annual vacation. She asked her co-worker to ship the boxes for her. While the housemaid was on vacation, her employer noticed that their valuable items were missing, so he asked the staff to search her room. They found the stolen items in three boxes for shipping. Her colleague was unable to ship the boxes because the housemaid did not leave enough money to cover the cost. When the housemaid returned to the UAE, she was arrested and interrogated. She claimed that her employer’s wife and daughter gave the items to her as gifts. ICA/Expat Media
