Dubai job scam gang arrested after duping 150 with fake jobs

DUBAI – Job scam gang members have been arrested in Dubai for duping 150 people with fake jobs in exchange for money, a Dubai Police official said. The Asian gang members ran a fake recruitment agency to lure victims with fake jobs and big salaries, said Brigadier Jamal Salem Al Jalaf, director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation (CID) at the Dubai Police. "They would then ask the victim for money for made-up reasons such as recruitment fees, taxes or for booking an interview appointment,” Al Jalaf said. Police were able to crack down on the scammers after receiving a tip-off. Police said the scammers had posted ads on social media to lure unsuspecting jobseekers, who were made to pay up to Dh3,000 to allegedly process their job application. Captain Ahmad Suhail Al Samahi, director of Anti-Fraud Department, said one of the victims paid Dh3,000 for a bogus job application. Al Samahi said police formed a team in coordination with inspectors from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation to investigate the issue and arrest the suspects. Police seized payment receipts from the suspects. On Saturday, Expatmedia.net ran an exclusive interview with a jobseeker who said she was told to pay Dh3,000 “security deposit” for a job at a company in the UAE. “I wanted to share my experience so that others will not fall for this scam,” Marinel (not her real name) told Expatmedia.net. The Filipina said she did not suspect anything wrong when she went for an interview, however, they later emailed her saying that she got the job but that she needed to pay a security deposit totaling Dh3,000.
