Dubai journalist in custody over wife’s death   DUBAI – A 60-year-old British journalist in Dubai is in police custody after his wife was found dead in their home in Jumeirah. Francis Matthew, Editor-at-Large of Gulf News, has been in custody since Wednesday (July 5) and has reportedly been accused of killing his 62-year-old wife, Jane. He was trying to revive her when police arrived. Sources said that Matthew was picked up by members of the Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department on Wednesday. The Dubai Police said he confessed that he hit her with a sharp tool following a dispute and that he did not mean to kill her. Matthew has worked for 22 years in Gulf News and was the editor of the English-language newspaper from 1995 to 2005. He has been a reporter and commentator in the Gulf from the 1980s. Gulf News Editor-in-Chief Abdul Hamid Ahmad said that Jane was found dead on Tuesday night. In an interview with Daily Mail, Ahmad confirmed that Matthew had been arrested on suspicion of killing his wife. “His wife is dead, and she has been killed, at their home. Francis Matthew unfortunately is still in custody with the police… Further than that, we have no idea exactly what is happening, and are trying to see him to get the right things from him directly. He is still being questioned by the police,” Ahmad told the Daily Mail. “Both Francis and Jane have been part of society for nearly 30 years and were very active members of the British expatriate community. We request that the family be given the privacy they need to cope with the loss,” he said. The couple was married in 1985. The couple’s son, John, was believed to have travelled to Dubai to try to visit Matthews in custody on Monday (July 10). A source told the Mail that Matthew is “currently being investigated on suspicion of assault leading to death”. Meanwhile, the Foreign Office said it was “providing support to the family at this sad time”.
