Dubai landlord offers distressed tenant Dh106,000 free rent, UAE residents pay it forward

  DUBAI – A landlord in Dubai has received praise and a landslide of orders at his Dubai Mall restaurant after he waived eight months of rent to a tenant who had lost his income in the emirate. A friend of the tenant, who is a father of two, had taken to social media to post about the generosity of Mansour Cheikh El Ard, owner of Granny’s Waffles at Dubai Mall. In the post on LinkedIn, the tenant’s friend said that after explaining his financial situation to El Ard, the landlord “sympathized” and said he was also suffering from “large business setbacks in his restaurant business” due to the pandemic. El Ard, however, returned later with an envelope containing all his post-dated rent cheques to let him live rent-free in the Arabian Ranches villa for the next eight months. The waived rent totals Dh106,000. “He said he didn’t want to hear anything about the contents of the envelope and that he only wished them well and would like to help in the only way he could,” the tenant’s friend said, urging people to repay the kindness by supporting the landlord’s restaurant. In an interview with National, El Ard said he wanted to help despite his own challenges, saying he understands how it feels to be left out without a home. El Ard’s act of kindness came back to the Syrian businessman very quickly, with people placing orders at his Granny Waffles café. El Ard said orders were pouring in from residents who wanted to help.
