Dubai launches 14 AI-powered pedestrian crossings

Fourteen AI-powered pedestrian crossing systems have been implemented across Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) to enhance public road safety, according to state news agency WAM. The first of its kind system in the region is developed by DSO in collaboration with Derq, a developer of artificial intelligence (AI) for road safety and traffic management. It is specifically designed to detect pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users approaching the pedestrian crosswalk. The technology can activate flashing warning signs, in-road warning lights, and traffic signal controllers to predict any potential danger with approaching vehicles. The system will also collect data to enhance road users’ awareness and relevant authorities’ responsiveness to safety problems and traffic performance. The system underwent two years of extensive testing before being introduced to the public. Muammar Al Katheeri, Chief Officer of Engineering and Sustainability at DIEZ, said, “The implementation of Derq’s AI Smart Pedestrian Crossing System at DSO aligns directly with the objectives outlined in the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. By integrating this state-of-the-art technology, we are creating an exceptional environment that prioritises innovation, safety, and sustainability." Al Katheeri added that this system will serve as a foundation to solidify DSO’s position as a technologically advanced zone which boosts the living and working experience of its residents and business partners. Dr. Georges Aoude, CEO and Co-Founder of Derq, emphasised that this initiative aligns with the vision of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, to establish Dubai as a safe, bicycle-friendly city with eco-friendly transportation options. DMM/Expat Media
