Dubai is set to transform its iconic Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary into a world-class eco-tourism and biodiversity hub as part of a Dh650 million development project unveiled by Dubai Municipality. The ambitious Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Development Project aims to increase annual visitor numbers six-fold, targeting between 250,000 and 300,000 eco-tourists each year. The contract for the first phase has already been awarded, with completion expected by the end of next year. Located near the city centre, Ras Al Khor is one of the few urban protected reserves in the world. It features a unique blend of salt flats, mangroves, and lagoons, and is home to more than 450 species of flora and fauna. It is also recognised as a globally important Bird Area by BirdLife International. The first phase of the development includes a 144 percent expansion of water bodies to cover a total of 74 hectares. Ten hectares of mudflats will also be added to support marine and bird life. “This initiative is not only about enhancing the natural beauty of Ras Al Khor but also about delivering measurable environmental benefits,” the municipality said. These include a projected 60 percent increase in carbon dioxide absorption, which will help improve the city's environmental sustainability. The sanctuary currently features several bird hides, including the Flamingo Hide, where visitors can observe greater flamingos, and the Mangrove Hide, which attracts grey herons, spoonbills, kingfishers, and osprey. Phase two of the project will focus on expanding green spaces, planting native vegetation, and improving natural habitats to attract even more wildlife. Public access will also be improved, with upgraded walkways, bird-watching stations, and educational signage to ensure a sustainable and immersive visitor experience.
