In a world where QR codes have become second nature — from paying bills to browsing menus — Dubai is making sure every scan is a safe one. The Dubai Electronic Security Center (DESC) has launched its “Scan Smart” campaign from October 24 to 30, an initiative that aims to empower residents and businesses to spot fake QR codes and prevent cybercrime. As the city celebrates Cybersecurity Awareness Month, DESC is putting the spotlight on a growing threat: tampered QR codes. Hackers have been known to overlay or replace legitimate codes, tricking users into visiting phishing websites or installing malware that can steal personal data. Globally, more than 4.2 million QR code forgery attempts were detected in the first half of 2025 alone — a figure DESC says underscores the need for vigilance. “The ‘Scan Smart’ campaign reflects DESC’s commitment to empowering both businesses and the public with practical cybersecurity knowledge and tools to safeguard their digital interactions,” said H.E. Yousuf AlShaibani, Chief Executive of DESC. “Through this initiative, we aim to make Dubai a safer cyberspace for everyone.” The campaign includes interactive kiosks and an educational microsite that teaches users how to verify QR codes before scanning. DESC also promotes RZAM, its free browser extension that detects suspicious websites linked to fake QR codes. To bring the message closer to the community, F&B venues across Dubai have joined as “Scan Smart Partners.” These cafés and restaurants are displaying campaign-branded materials such as stickers and table tents, encouraging safe scanning habits — and even offering free coffee and exclusive discounts to promote participation. By displaying the “Scan Smart Partner” badge, these venues show their commitment to digital safety and community awareness. Customers are encouraged to double-check all QR codes before scanning, and report any suspicious ones to authorities. ICA/Expat Media
