Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially lifted the ban on carrying e-scooters in the Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram systems, allowing commuters to bring foldable e-scooters on board under specific conditions. Announced on Friday (October 4), the new rules aim to accommodate the growing popularity of e-scooters while ensuring passenger safety. Foldable e-scooters without seats can now be carried during all operating hours of the Metro and Tram. However, they must meet specific size and weight requirements, with a maximum size of 120cm x 70cm x 40cm and a weight of 20kg. These scooters must be folded when entering stations, platforms, and while onboard trains or trams. E-scooter users are also required to follow safety rules, including keeping the scooter's power turned off at all times and using wide gates at Metro stations for check-in and check-out. The RTA has also outlined a detailed set of guidelines that must be adhered to. These include prohibitions on charging the e-scooter within Metro or Tram premises, riding the e-scooter in stations or footbridges, and bringing in dirty or damaged scooters. Additionally, batteries used in the e-scooters must comply with international standards to avoid environmental hazards. The e-scooter ban was initially introduced on March 1, following a spike in safety concerns. RTA authorities enforced the ban to ensure the safety of passengers and the smooth functioning of Dubai’s public transportation system. With the new rules, e-scooters can now be a convenient last-mile solution for commuters using the Metro and Tram, as long as the safety standards are maintained. ICA/Expat Media
