Dubai has taken a major step toward launching its ambitious underground transport project, the Dubai Loop. Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), announced during the World Government Summit that a Dh2.5 billion contract has been signed with The Boring Company to implement the project. The Dubai Loop will span 24 kilometres, with the first phase covering approximately six kilometres at an estimated cost of Dh600 million. According to Al Tayer, the system will use advanced drilling technology that significantly reduces construction costs compared to traditional road building. “The cost per kilometre using this technology is approximately Dh70 million, compared to Dh125 million for conventional road construction,” he said. The underground network will focus on improving the “first and last mile” journey for passengers, connecting key transport hubs and commercial districts. The system is expected to serve around 13,000 passengers daily, particularly in Dubai’s financial and business areas, helping to reduce congestion and improve mobility. Al Tayer said the entire project is expected to be completed within two years, with the first phase commencing once contractual procedures are finalised. The Dubai Loop will be the second project of its kind globally, after California, and represents another step in Dubai’s strategy to adopt innovative, smart and sustainable transport solutions.
