A Dubai court fined a driver Dh15,000 after crashing into another car while under the influence of alcohol. On September 11, the Emirati driver swerved sharply to the right before colliding with the vehicle in Bur Dubai. Both cars were damaged, but nobody was injured. The police noticed that one of the drivers acted strangely, so he was ordered to take a breathalyzer test. He was discovered to be under the influence of alcohol. The UAE has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to drinking and driving. This means that there is no legal limit for drinking while driving. The driver was arrested and later released on bail two days later. According to prosecutors, he was driving carelessly and not paying attention to the road. He was charged with drinking and driving, and damaging property. In Dubai Traffic Court this week, he admitted to both charges. In addition to the Dh15,000 ($4,080) fine, his license was suspended for three months. The driver was warned that if he did not pay the fine, he would be imprisoned for 150 days. According to Ministry of Interior data, people driving under the influence of alcohol were involved in 56 road accidents in the UAE in 2021, resulting in 12 deaths and 44 injuries.
