Dubai: Man sentenced to life imprisonment after murdering his girlfriend

The Dubai Court of Appeal upheld a first-instance court's decision to sentence an Asian man to life in jail for premeditatedly killing his fiancée inside his vehicle. The case began in July 2019 when a young man entered a police station in Dubai with blood on his clothes. He told the authorities that he had murdered his girlfriend and that her body was outside in the car. After ordering his colleagues to detain the man, the officer on duty proceeded to the man's car. According to the Public Prosecution, he was astonished to find a female with her throat slit open and multiple knife wounds all over her body. In addition, a huge knife was discovered in the car's back seat. The man said he had been in a romantic relationship with the victim for five years before discovering that she was dating another man. He contacted her family in her home country, who requested that he return her. He then asked to meet her, threatening to kill her if she refused to marry him and return to their native nation with him. He claimed to have purchased a knife with the intent of using it and stored it in his truck. He drove to a parking lot near the victim's residence on the evening of the incident and requested she meets him there. She came and sat next to him in the passenger seat, and they talked about returning to her home country. According to the accused, the conversation lasted about three hours. He claimed he told her he loved her and wanted to marry her, but she denied his proposal since her family did not want her to marry him. The man said the girl also insulted him. He admitted to stabbing her in the neck and other parts of her body. After she died, he threw the knife in the back seat and went to the nearest police station to turn himself in. The court found him guilty of premeditated murder and sentenced him to life in prison. BKM/ Expat Media
