Dubai may reopen to tourists by July
DUBAI – Dubai may start to reopen to tourists by July, a tourism official said as the emirate relaxed restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic. Currently, malls, shops, hotels and cafes have been reopened in Dubai under conditions that precautionary measures against Covid-19 remain enforced. The process of Dubai reopening to tourism is likely to be gradual, depending on global restrictions, said Helal Al Marri, director general of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing. Al Marri, speaking to Bloomberg TV, said the process may even be delayed until September. “The thing about the scenario is a global question,” Al Marri said. “Many countries remain closed and it’s more about the bilateral discussion.” UAE-based airlines Emirates and Etihad have announced they are resuming normal flights in the coming months, with Emirates saying that regular flights will resume on July 1 and Etihad saying that commercial flights will resume on May 16. However, tourist visas to the UAE remain suspended since March 17 as a precautionary measure against the spread of Covid-19.
