Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum recently visited the Dubai Metro Blue Line construction site at International City 1, where he reviewed progress and future plans for one of the network’s largest stations. He was received by Mattar Al Tayer along with senior officials and representatives from contracting and consultancy firms overseeing the project. During the visit, Sheikh Mohammed was briefed on the project timeline, which began with route approval in November 2023, followed by contract awards in December 2024 and the start of construction in June 2025. The project has now reached 20 percent completion, with more than 10,000 workers and over 500 engineers and experts involved in its delivery. The International City 1 station is set to become the largest underground interchange station in Dubai’s metro network, spanning more than 44,000 square metres and designed to handle up to 350,000 passengers daily. Sheikh Mohammed also reviewed the architectural and interior designs of upcoming stations, including the iconic Emaar Properties Station, which at 74 metres will be the world’s tallest metro station. The station designs draw inspiration from the four elements of nature—air, water, earth and fire—creating distinct visual identities while enhancing passenger experience. During the visit, Sheikh Mohammed gave the signal to begin operations of the tunnel boring machine named “Al Wugeisha,” marking a key milestone in construction. Tunnelling will proceed in three directions from the International City hub, connecting to Mirdif, Al Warsan and the Auto Market areas. Officials said construction works are progressing ahead of schedule, with more than 13 million work hours completed without any lost-time injuries. The Blue Line is expected to significantly enhance connectivity in rapidly growing areas such as Dubai Silicon Oasis and Dubai Academic City, while supporting future population growth and urban expansion.
