Commuters using the Dubai Metro will need to top up a minimum of Dh20 when recharging their Nol cards at ticket vending machines, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced. The change takes effect starting on March 1, 2025, increasing the minimum top-up amount of Dh5. The RTA clarified that the top-up amount varies depending on where commuters recharge their Nol cards. Last year, the authority raised the minimum top-up at metro station ticket offices from Dh20 to Dh50, further encouraging the use of digital and automated reloading options. To board the metro, commuters must maintain a minimum Nol card balance of Dh7.50, ensuring sufficient funds for travel. The Nol card system remains an integral part of Dubai’s public transportation network, allowing seamless access to metro, bus, tram, and marine transport services. In August last year, the RTA increased the minimum top-up for Nol cards to Dh50 when recharging at ticketing stations at Dubai Metro stations.Nol card types and benefits
Dubai residents and visitors can choose from four types of Nol cards: • Silver card: Standard option for daily commuters • Gold card: Provides access to Gold Class metro cabins • Personal card: Registered under the user’s name, offering additional security and benefits • Red ticket pass: A disposable card suitable for short-term visitors Beyond transport, Nol cards are widely accepted for payments across Dubai. They can be used at select supermarkets, restaurants, parking meters, and even government service centers. In December 2024, the RTA expanded Nol card usage to include payments for accredited e-scooter services, furthering Dubai’s cashless economy initiative. The authority also offers personalized Nol cards, allowing users to earn loyalty points, receive discounts, and block their cards in case of loss or theft. Commuters have five different ways to top up their Nol cards, including vending machines, ticket counters, online portals, mobile apps, and retail stores. RTA encourages users to explore online top-ups through the Nol Pay app to save time and avoid station queues.
