Hello, Alfred. InsuranceMarket has secured the naming rights to a Dubai Metro station formerly known as Mashreq Metro Station.

Dubai Metro stations frequently undergo name changes as part of an innovative revenue model that allows companies to purchase naming rights for up to 10 years. This initiative, launched by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in 2008, is a world-first approach to public transport infrastructure, allowing local and international companies to brand metro stations while contributing to the city’s economic development. The program offers companies the opportunity to name Dubai Metro stations in exchange for sponsorship, providing a unique advertising platform and visibility in one of the world’s busiest cities. The idea behind the naming rights project is to boost public-private partnerships while improving transport services through funds raised by these collaborations. Managed by the RTA, the program covers 23 stations and two metro lines. These stations have been carefully selected based on their location, expected passenger traffic, and other factors that determine their value in the market. Companies are able to leverage their investment by integrating marketing strategies directly at the stations, offering a level of branding and customer interaction that is unmatched in other public transit systems globally.

How Dubai Metro naming rights work

Each company that acquires naming rights secures them for a period of 10 years, during which they can fully utilize their brand’s presence at the designated metro station. This includes signage, announcements, and even station livery that reflects their brand identity. One example is the renaming of Mashreq Metro Station to InsuranceMarket.ae Metro Station, announced on September 5, 2024. The rebranding was part of the RTA’s ongoing efforts to attract partnerships that enhance the transportation infrastructure while also benefiting corporate sponsors. This type of public-private partnership has become increasingly common in Dubai. In 2021, Dubai Marina Metro Station was rebranded as Sobha Realty Metro Station, and in 2023, Al Safa Metro Station was renamed as Onpassive Metro Station. Other stations, such as Al Jaffliya (now Max Fashion Metro Station) and Al Rashidiya (renamed Centrepoint Metro Station), reflect similar naming agreements. These partnerships don’t just enhance a company’s visibility—they also support Dubai’s economic growth. Companies benefit from long-term branding opportunities that allow them to reach a wide audience, including both residents and tourists who rely on the metro daily. In turn, the revenue generated from these agreements helps the RTA maintain and upgrade Dubai’s public transportation system.

How companies can apply

Businesses interested in securing metro station naming rights can apply through a formal process managed by the RTA. The first step involves completing a Request for Information (RFI) form. Once submitted, the RTA reviews the company’s brand to ensure it is culturally appropriate and fits the station’s location. The goal is to match companies to stations in a way that aligns with their business presence and the community they serve. The RTA’s CEO of the Rail Agency, Abdul Mohsen Ibrahim Kalbat, has emphasized the importance of these collaborations, stating that they play a crucial role in boosting Dubai’s competitiveness on a global scale. “Corporate partnerships like these allow us to improve infrastructure while giving companies unique branding opportunities,” he said. The RTA is careful to avoid over-commercialization by managing the branding process, particularly in stations located near historical or landmark sites. Global sponsorship and event marketing specialists, such as IMG, are tasked with structuring the naming rights program, ensuring that it offers both marketing potential and support for Dubai’s growing transportation network.

What to expect when station changes name

When a station is rebranded, the RTA updates all external and internal signage, as well as the audio announcements within metro trains. These updates are phased in over a period of months to ensure a smooth transition. The most recent example is the InsuranceMarket.ae Metro Station, where signage updates will be completed between September and November 2024. Commuters are advised to take note of these changes, as the new station names will be reflected in maps, announcements, and smart systems across the metro network. RTA staff are available to assist passengers with any questions during the transition period. ICA/PIA/Expat Media
