Dubai Metro travelers told to observe social distancing

DUBAI – A long queue was seen at the Dubai Metro station in Al Rigga on Wednesday (March 25) as the public was told to observe social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic. At 7am, passengers could be seen moving along a single queue as they entered the station to board the train. A security personnel told Expatmedia.net that it was part of crowd control and social distancing measures to limit the number of standing passengers inside the metro. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) confirmed that as part of social distancing measures, "each train will be limited to a total of 138 passengers (seating capacity) and 72 passengers on each tram". The RTA also said that staff will be deployed on platforms to monitor the occupancy and report to the RTA Operation Control Centre. UAE authorities have been taking preventive measures across the country to curb the spread of the new coronavirus or Covid-19, which has infected 50 new people on Tuesday (March 24), bringing the total number of cases in the country to 248. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, took to social media on Monday evening to ask the public to “recognise the seriousness of the new reality” and to say that the coronavirus is a “real threat to each one of us”. Sheikh Hamdan also reminded the public: “Social Distancing is NOT a matter of choice. it is a critical DEMAND from every one of us, in order for our city and our society to remain safe.” Earlier this week, police in patrol vehicles were also seen reminding the public through loudspeakers to stay home. The Dubai Police has urged the public to follow the #StayHome national campaign, stressing the importance of residents "fully complying with directives issued by authorities to safeguard public health". The police warned that violators will face imprisonment and a fine of between Dh200,000 and Dh1 million.
