The Dubai Metro celebrated its 15th anniversary on Monday (September 9), marking a significant achievement in the city’s journey toward transforming its public transport system. Since its inauguration in 2009, the metro has become a vital part of Dubai’s infrastructure, playing a pivotal role in shaping the emirate into a global business and tourism hub. Since its launch, Dubai Metro has served 2.5 billion passengers, proving its success in accommodating the city’s growing population and rapid urbanization. With a daily ridership averaging 730,000 passengers, the metro has consistently exceeded expectations in operational efficiency, safety, and punctuality, with a 99.7 percent on-time performance rate. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), highlighted the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who envisioned Dubai Metro as the backbone of the city’s transportation system. “The metro has enhanced the emirate’s standing as a global city, linking key areas and ensuring safe, smooth travel,” Al Tayer said. Dubai Metro has expanded over the past 15 years, growing from 52 kilometers in length to 90 kilometers, with 53 stations and 129 operating trains. From an initial ridership of 20,000 passengers in 2009, the metro now serves 767,000 passengers daily, peaking at 900,000 on major occasions such as New Year’s Eve. The metro’s development has also been instrumental in reducing Dubai’s carbon footprint, alleviating traffic congestion, and promoting the use of public transport. It has provided significant economic benefits by supporting the city’s global competitiveness and enabling the efficient hosting of major international events, including Expo 2020. The Dubai Metro has also contributed to the local economy by creating job opportunities for Emiratis, with over 200 nationals currently employed. It has remained the world’s longest driverless metro system, underlining Dubai’s commitment to technological innovation. As Dubai continues its growth trajectory, the metro is expected to further expand, with the upcoming Dubai Blue Line set to enhance connectivity and further strengthen the emirate’s reputation as a forward-thinking, sustainable city.
