A motorist in Dubai was recently spotted doing the unthinkable: reading a newspaper while driving. This eye-catching incident was captured by Dubai Police's high-tech smart cameras, which can detect distracted driving and other traffic violations, even through tinted windows. Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, shared details about the incident as part of the force's ongoing road safety campaign. Al Mazrouei emphasized the importance of staying alert behind the wheel, saying hat this recent case illustrates the growing challenge of distracted driving in the city. Dubai Police’s smart cameras, installed across major roads, are designed to capture various traffic offences including mobile phone use, failure to wear seat belts, and other distractions that can lead to accidents. In addition to the newspaper incident, cameras also caught another female driver using two mobile phones at once, raising further safety concerns. Al Mazrouei that severe penalties apply for distracted driving, with fines ranging from Dh400 to Dh1,000, along with four black points added to their record, as well as impoundment of vehicles for 30 days. In Dubai, motorists whose vehicles have been impounded will need to pay Dh50,000 in order to release their vehicle. Motorists are advised to follow safety guidelines, such as keeping their hands on the wheel, maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, respecting speed limits, and avoiding distractions.
