Among the many divisions of the Dubai Police, one stands out not just for its unique mode of patrol but also for its connection with the community: the Dubai Mounted Police. These officers, mounted on former racehorses turned highly trained patrol horses, play a crucial role in keeping Dubai safe, especially in areas that traditional vehicle patrols find challenging to navigate. The Dubai Mounted Police have been intensifying their neighborhood patrols since 2020, and their presence has become a reassuring sight for residents and visitors alike. “Using horses gives us more flexibility in patrolling areas with narrow streets,” explains Captain Dhahi Al Jallaf of the Dubai Mounted Police. Indeed, the ability to navigate tight spaces and traverse various terrains makes these mounted units indispensable in ensuring safety across Dubai’s diverse landscapes. Covering residential and commercial areas, including Al Aweer, Jumeirah, Al Barsha, Satwa, Al Badaa, Al Jafiliya, Al Diyafah, and Rashidiya, the Mounted Police operate in pairs from 6pm until 6am. The officers’ nightly patrols have become a symbol of security, particularly in neighborhoods where their presence deters criminal activity and enhances community confidence.

Multifaceted approach to safety

In just the first half of this year, the Dubai Mounted Police conducted 732 horseback patrols. These patrols are not only about maintaining visibility; they play a critical role in apprehending suspects, conducting surveillance, and performing checks on suspicious individuals and vehicles. This proactive approach helps maintain a safer environment and ensures that any potential threats are swiftly addressed. Beyond regular patrols, the Dubai Mounted Police also secure sports facilities and support major events throughout the year. Their presence is vital in ensuring that these events proceed smoothly, safeguarding both participants and spectators. Throwback to Dubai Mounted Police patrolling Al Khail at night:

Commitment to training and community engagement

Training and development are at the core of the Mounted Police’s operations. In the first half of this year alone, 1,114 individuals received equestrian training at the station. This not only enhances the skills of the officers but also engages the community, offering valuable equestrian education to those interested in learning more about horseback riding and care. The station’s dedication to community service is further exemplified through its therapeutic training programs for people of determination. These programs utilize the calming presence of horses to offer therapeutic benefits, helping individuals improve their physical and mental well-being. Additionally, the Dubai Mounted Police served 1,245 beneficiaries in the first half of the year, providing services such as horse care, desert horse riding, pony rides, and horse transport services. The station even gifted 18 horses to the public, underscoring the police force’s commitment to community happiness and well-being.

Equestrian excellence and competitions

The Dubai Mounted Police are not only known for their security efforts but also for their commitment to equestrian excellence. This year, they participated in four tent pegging championships, an internationally recognized equestrian sport. As the first police team in the UAE to compete in this sport, they have set a high standard for police teams nationwide. Maintaining a fleet of 122 highly trained horses is no small feat. The Dubai Mounted Police station is equipped with a dedicated team of veterinarians and nurses to ensure the health and well-being of their horses. This commitment to veterinary care and horse maintenance ensures that the Dubai Mounted Police can continue to operate at the highest level. The Dubai Mounted Police have proven to be an integral part of the city’s security framework. Through their specialized patrols, training programs, and community engagement initiatives, they not only enhance safety and support major events but also foster a stronger connection between the police force and the public. Their unique approach to law enforcement, combined with their dedication to community service, makes them a beloved and respected presence in Dubai. ICA/Expat Media
