Dubai Municipality warns against slime toys

  DUBAI - Letting children play with slime toys may do them more harm than good, the Dubai Municipality said in a warning issued on Sunday (March 18). The toys have become popular with children because of their gooey texture, but pose a health hazard due to the ingredients used to make them. The municipality said the toys contain a mixture of harmful substances and urged parents to keep their children away from this type of toy. Slime toys are made using a combination of ingredients such as borax, washing powder, glue and coloured materials, which the municipality said can make children ill. The municipality did not say, however, whether an incident of a child falling ill from playing with slime toys has been recorded in the UAE. A common ingredient in slime toys is borax, a powdery mineral used as a pesticide and in cleaning products. Exposure to borax can cause skin or eye irritation, rashes, nausea and respiratory problems. Significant exposure to borax may also disrupt hormones.
