At the Winter Night Market in Al Rigga, Dubai.

Several night markets in Dubai are gearing up to reinstate live entertainment after a temporary suspension due to permit requirements from the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM). Operators have been working to meet compliance, with performances expected to resume as early as Monday (January 20). Michico Lopez Ramos of Creative Event Management confirmed to Expat Media that live entertainment had been halted over the past two weeks due to tighter regulations. “We can only do small events. No loud music, and no performer can come up the stage until we receive the permit from DTCM,” she explained. When Expat Media visited two night markets in Deira over the weekend, performance areas remained cordoned off, reflecting the strict enforcement of the rule. At one night market, a representative told Expat Media that they received their permit, allowing them to stage live entertainment. According to the DTCM, every artist or performer must obtain an entertainment permit for any public or corporate event, including those held in outdoor markets. F.G., a performer at one of the night markets, said this is the first instance in his two-year experience where live entertainment at outdoor markets has faced such stringent scrutiny. He added that a resumption of live entertainment cannot come soon enough. “Of course, the shutdown has affected us artists because we get paid to entertain, but we have to abide by the law,” F.G. said. Despite the challenges, event organizer Ramos remains optimistic. “People come to these night markets to get entertained, so without live performances on stage, the winter experience really isn’t complete,” she remarked. Night markets in Dubai, such as the Winter Night Market, are a popular winter attraction, drawing residents and tourists alike for their vibrant mix of shopping, food, and entertainment. Live performances have always been a cornerstone of these events, offering a platform for local and international talents and adding to the appeal of these markets during the peak winter season.
