Free parking, toll fee exemptions among perks to spur purchase of electric vehicles

  DUBAI – In an effort to convince car owners to go green by replacing their oil-powered vehicles with those that run on electricity, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) revealed four new incentives. The incentives are: electric car owners will be able to charge their vehicles for free at Dewa-approved stations until 2019, free use of designated green parking in Dubai, free electric vehicle registration and renewal fees as well as a free Salik tag and a licence plate sticker identifying the vehicle as an electric vehicle. The incentives were revealed by DEWA and RTA officials in a press conference at the Armani Hotel at Burj Khalifa on Sunday. DEWA managing director and chief executive Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer said he cannot give the exact amount to be spent by the municipality for the perks offers but free public electricity alone will cost "millions" of dirhams. Al Tayer also clarified that the use of home-charging stations will not be free "Under the umbrella of the Supreme Energy Council, Dewa is working on implementing the Dubai Green Mobility Initiative to promote the use of electric and hybrid vehicles. This supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 for Dubai to have the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050 and the Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy to slash carbon emissions by 16 per cent by 2021," said Al Tayer. Al Tayer said they aim to have 42,000 electric vehicles (EVs) on the emirate's streets by 2030. The DEWA chief executive said the incentives program is in line with the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy's creation of the Dubai Green Mobility Initiative. The initiative is meant to "motivate organizations to use sustainable transport such as hybrid and electric vehicles and to contribute to the sustainable development of the emirate by reducing carbon emissions in ground transport which is the second largest gas emitter in Dubai." Meanwhile, Nasser Hamad Khalifa Abu Shehab, RTA chief executive of Strategy and Corporate Governance, said 14 locations in the emirate will be designated as free RTA parking areas for electric cars. The designated areas include Madinat Jumeirah, Jumeirah Beach Residence and Dubai International Airport. Shebab said an electric car must have an EV sticker on the licence plate to utilize the free space.
