Economic execs echo IMF's forecast of 3.6 percent growth for UAE next year
DUBAI –Dubai's efforts to diversify its economy and resilience against challenges have been helpful to the emirates as officials believe that economic growth is expected to at 3.6 percent next year as forecast by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The IMF earlier said it expects Dubai's gross domestic product (GDP) to grow 2.7 percent this year and 3.6 next year as investments and Expo 2020-related expenses continue to fuel the economy's growth.
Dubai is planning to spend Dh47.3 billion this year with a 27 percent increase in infrastructure expenses ahead of Expo 2020. So far, Expo 2020 has has awarded Dh11 billion in construction contracts for Expo 2020 this year, Dh2 billion of which went to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Expo organizers awarded Dh2 billion worth of contracts last year.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, second deputy chairman of the Dubai Executive Council and chairman of the Economic Development Committee (EDC), said, "Diversification, resilience and sustainability are enshrined in every project, policy and strategy that Dubai adopts. The oil sector now makes up for less than one percent of Dubai's GDP while varied initiatives have opened up unprecedented opportunities for global businesses in several non-oil sectors."
Al Maktoum revealed that trade made up 28 percent of Dubai's GDP last year, transportation and storage at 12 percent and financial services accounted for 11 percent of GDP.
Al Maktoum pointed out that the transportation sector has contributed much to the growth of the construction sector hrough projects such as the Dubai Metro extension and the expansion of container terminals at Jebel Ali port.
The real estate sector is expected to accelerate 4.3 percent this year and 3.8 percent in 2018 while the manufacturing sector will expand by 3.3 percent this year and 4.1 percent in 2018, he said.
As for the tourism sector, growth will slow down to five percent this year and 5.1 percent next year but he did not say why.
Meanwhile, Sami Al Qamzi, director-general of Dubai Economy, for his part, said in line with projections made last January, Dubai's real economy is forecast to grow 3.1 percent this year from 2.85 per cent last year.
