Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has designed a plan to make the emirate into a 20-minute city where daily services are accessible within a 20-minute journey by walking or cycling by the year 2030. The plan was endorsed by RTA’s Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors. The plan is designed to facilitate the development of transport systems and roads that support a 20-minute city, focusing on improving accessibility and smart mobility solutions. It focuses on improving accessibility, fostering better integration of multi-modal transport, expanding current and future mobility services, and charting smart mobility solutions. "RTA’s future entails studying and deploying integrated and soft mobility solutions along with connected and real-time mobility systems, and self-driving transport. RTA intends to operate self-driving Chevrolet Bolt autonomous electric vehicles, positioning Dubai as the first city in the world to operate American Cruise self-driving vehicles outside the USA,” Al Tayer said. Along with the UAE hosting the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), RTA's strategic plan centred on sustainability through speeding up the shift towards zero-emission transportation. The RTA also seeks to convert all taxis and limousines in Dubai to electric and hydrogen vehicles by 2040 and convert public buses into electric and hydrogen buses by 2050. ICA/Expat Media
