The Dubai Metro station.
Dubai plans to double its number of Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram stations by 2040 as part of a major public transport project. The Executive Council of Dubai unveiled its plan on Sunday (June 30) as part of its wider economic strategy. The meeting was chaired Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and First Deputy Ruler of Dubai. There are currently 55 Dubai Metro stations and 11 Dubai Tram station. The number of stations will be increased to 96 by 2030 and will cover 140 stations by 2040. It will start with the Dh18 billion Blue Line project that will add 30km to the metro network northeast of Dubai. The Blue Line will add 14 stations to the Dubai Metro network, with more than half of the new stations to be built underground. Work on the Dubai Metro Blue Line is expected to start this year and finish by 2029, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of Dubai Metro. When completed, the Blue Line will connect Bur Dubai and Deira, Downtown and Business Bay, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Marina and JBR and Expo City Dubai. The increase in the number of Dubai Metro stations is aimed at supporting Dubai’s vision to become a “20-minute city” while also helping to increase residential and commercial spaces surrounding the stations.
