Dubai Police confirmed on Tuesday (September 2) that a driver crashed into the Mumuso store at Spinneys in Umm Suqeim after mistakenly pressing the accelerator instead of the brake. Brigadier Jumaa Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic, said the female driver “suddenly confused the pedals,” causing her vehicle to surge forward and shatter the store’s glass façade during the incident on Sunday (August 31). “Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Only the vehicle and storefront sustained damage,” he said. He reminded motorists to remain calm and fully attentive behind the wheel, noting that proper seating position and correct foot placement can prevent such accidents. A Mumuso employee confirmed to Expat Media that no staff or customers were injured in the incident. “The part that was damaged is where our office is located, but thankfully no one was near it when it collapsed,” she said. She added that a Filipina colleague who was meant to be on duty had taken leave that day, sparing her from the incident. By late afternoon, Mumuso resumed operations, with staff serving customers as usual while repairs got underway. “Operations are back to normal. The damaged area is being restored,” the employee said. Meanwhile, Spinneys said it has launched a “safety review” of its community centre to identify temporary and long-term measures to prevent such accidents. The incident echoes a tragic case in Dubai earlier this year, when an Asian driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, fatally hitting a woman waiting at a bus stop. He was recently convicted by the Dubai Traffic Court of reckless driving and ordered to pay Dh200,000 in blood money to the victim’s family. The court also fined him Dh10,000 and suspended his driving licence for six months. The victim’s family has since filed a civil lawsuit against the driver, his employer, and the insurance company, seeking Dh500,000 in damages for financial, emotional, and psychological suffering, with a demand for 12 percent annual interest from the date of filing.
